Schweppes is the well-known brand of the British carbonated soft drink company of the same name, owned by the US company Dr Pepper Snapple Group since 2008. Everyone drinks it, or almost, it is found at bars, on supermarket shelves and on billboards. Yet few know its history, which has its roots in 1783. The conception of the drink dates back to when Johann Jacob Schweppe, a German jeweler and scientist, developed a process to produce sparkling water based on the discoveries of the English chemist Joseph Priestley. Jacop therefore invented the first industrial process for capturing and bottling the famous bubbles. The invention was immediately a great success and was even approved by many doctors. After its founding in Geneva, Schweppes thus became the first modern soft drink industry.
