Josef Manner & Comp AG is a leading manufacturer of wafers, sugar-coated candies and aerated confectionery products. Josef Manner & Comp AG is a rare example of a successful Austrian company, which has been largely family-owned since its foundation. The famous confectionery products are exported to over 50 European and non-European countries. About 700 employees work in two locations; the head office in the 17th district of Vienna and a branch in Wolkersdorf in Lower Austria. Here the Manner, Casali, Napoli, Ildefonso and Victor Schmidt brand products are made. Like all great success stories, this story begins with a unique personality from the pioneer days of the company. In 1890 Josef Manner, an experienced merchant, opened a small shop in the heart of Vienna, a short distance from St. Stephen's Cathedral, which mainly sold chocolate bars and fig coffee. From the beginning Josef Manner has aimed to offer chocolate products of better quality and at a lower price than the competition. "Any child who spends a Kreuzer on my products", he said, "should not just have a snack, but something of nutritional value." As Josef Manners' suppliers were unable to supply the desired quality of chocolate, the Stephansplatz pastry chef decided to make his own chocolate. At the age of 25 Josef Manner I. bought the license, premises and furniture of a small chocolate manufacturer in Vienna's 5th district in the former Wildenmanngasse. From 1 March 1890 he was the new owner of the “Chocoladenfabrik Josef Manner”. “Chocolate for everyone” has been the company's motto from the very beginning. As a reminder of the company's origins, there is still an ancient "mill" with which cocoa beans were ground by hand and a business card depicting the Cathedral of Santo Stefano in its original form, a trademark in use ever since. As early as 1890 the company had to expand due to its great success. The tephansplatz shop and the factory building on Wildenmanngasse, which soon became too small, were sold. By 1897, the former candy seller had become a true chocolate manufacturer with over 100 employees at the company's headquarters in Hernalser Kulmgasse.
