The Lion® is a chocolate bar put on the market by Rowntree Mackintosh in 1976 and subsequently packaged by Nestlé (after the acquisition of the English confectionery industry by the Swiss multinational) since 1988. It consists of a wafer, with caramel and puffed rice. and covered with milk chocolate. The concept of the product was created by the maitre chocolatier Allan Norman, known for his confectionery innovations. Its market launch was decided by Rowntree Mackintosh manager Eric Luciano Nicoli in the seventies, after an initial test in the Dorset area (England). In some areas of the world, such as the United States and Canada (countries where it was originally marketed by Rowntree DeMet's, the North American division of Rowntree Mackintosh) it was known as the Big Cat until the late 1990s. Nestlé then proceeded to standardize the Lion denomination for the product in the various international markets. White Lion and Peanut Butter Lion variants are also available in some European countries.
