When the first Starbucks® opened in 1971, the company was a single store in Seattle's historic Pike Place Market. From a narrow facade, Starbucks® offered the freshness of some of the best coffee beans in the world. The name, inspired by Moby Dick, evoked the romanticism of the high seas and the seafaring tradition of the first coffee traders. In 1981, Howard Schultz (President and CEO of Starbucks®) walked into a Starbucks® store for the first time. From his first cup of Sumatra Coffee, Howard was drawn to Starbucks® and entered it a year later. In 1983, Howard traveled to Italy and was fascinated by Italian bars and the romance of the coffee experience. He had the vision of bringing the tradition of Italian coffees back to the United States. He wanted to create a place to generate conversation and a sense of community - a third place between work and home. He left the company for a short time to start his own coffee shops called "Il Giornale" and returned in August 1987 to purchase Starbucks® with the help of local investors.

From the start, Starbucks® set out to be a different kind of company. One that not only celebrated coffee and its rich tradition, but also brought a feeling of connection and relationship.
