Primitivo, grown with the characteristic sapling shape, is the best known and widespread native red grape variety in Puglia. The origins of Primitivo are uncertain, it is believed that the vine is of Dalmatian or Croatian origin and that it was imported to Puglia more than 2000 years ago, initially cultivated in the Gioia del Colle areas and then produced throughout Puglia. The name Primitivo derives from the Latin “Primativus” precisely due to the precocity of the ripening of the grapes. Arpago is a Primitivo Puglia PGI grown in the Taranto area. It has a ruby red color with purple reflections that tend to become garnet-colored with aging. It has an intense and enveloping taste with hints of red berries, black cherries, blackberries, plums, cherries in alcohol. Warm, soft, harmonious and with good persistence. Wine that goes well with aged cured meats, first courses with robust meat-based sauces, red meats, game and aged cheeses.
